Non-Christmas Christmas Story Times

Christmas is my favorite time of year to be around children. They are so excited and hyped up. I LOVE it! There is NO quiet in the library whatsoever. Since we are a public library, we try to reserve holiday story times for specific dates and times and then keep more generic themes in our weekly story times. However, when you’re in the mood, sometimes you just want to read Christmas stories. Here’s a great kind of Christmasy story time we did last week.

This is from our Music and Motion for 3-5 year olds and their caregivers. It’s a dance/movement/song/book half hour of fun!

Please note that all good ideas in this story time came from my partner in crime, Mrs. Janson. She has taught me much that is good about my career. All mediocre and mundane ideas are strictly my own ūüôā

Theme: Toys!

Opening song: Shake your Sillies out by Raffi from More Singable Songs . (song available for download here:

Finger Play: These are Grandma’s Glasses

Book #1: A Pocket For Corduroy by Don Freeman

Song and Dance #1: I’ve Got Two Hands¬†by Peter and Ellen Allard from Sing It! Say it! Stamp it! Sway it! vol. 3. (download here:¬†

Finger Play: 10 little fingers

Book #2:¬†Olivia and the Missing Toy¬†by Ian Falconer. However, while I love Olivia, in this story she really doesn’t show off the true meaning of Christmas with sharing, so I think if I did it over again, I’d read Knuffle Bunny free: an unexpected diversion¬†by Mo Willems.

Song # 2: The Chicken Dance. Enough said. Who doesn’t like the chicken dance?

Finger Play: Open, Shut them

Book # 3: Kipper’s Toy Box¬†by Mick Inkpen

Song #  3:  Jingle Bells (we gave hand-held bell bracelets to each child to ring)

Finger Play: Hands up High, Hands down low, hide your hands, where’d they go, One hand up, the other one too. Clap them, fold them, now we’re through.

Book # 4: Frosty the Snowman by Steve Nelson.

Song: Frosty the Snowman from the Chipmunks Christmas Cd. For this song we took our bells and had a snowman parade around the story hour room. It was a TON of fun!

Merry Christmas!
